Overview

The Crate Marketplace is a central hub for Rewst customers to discover, install, and manage automations. However, the original experience presented friction: limited search, no categories, and no clear way to find new or unpacked crates. Customers reported difficulty locating relevant content, resulting in wasted time and missed opportunities for adoption.

Through user interviews, surveys, and internal feedback, I identified the key pain points and rebuilt the marketplace with a modern, scalable design system. The Phase 1 release focused on a refreshed UI, expanded search, categories, filters, and sorting tools, making crate discovery faster, more intuitive, and aligned with customer needs.

Objectives

  • Improve discoverability by introducing categories and broader search capabilities.

  • Reduce friction with quick filters (e.g., My Crates, New) and persistent filtering.

  • Support scalability by creating a flexible foundation for future marketplace growth.

  • Enhance usability through a cleaner card design and intuitive side-panel filters.

Approach

I structured the redesign in phases, with Phase 1 delivering the most critical improvements.

User Research & Pain Point Analysis

  • Identified frustration around search limited to titles, lack of categories, and absence of quick ways to see new crates.

  • Partnered with internal teams (Product, Engineering, Customer Success) to validate requirements.

Design Exploration & Old vs New Comparison

  • Old Marketplace (confusing, limited tools): Users manually scrolled through crates, with no clear organization.

  • New Marketplace: Introduced categories (Operational Efficiency, Security, Financial, Infrastructure, Communication), advanced search (titles + descriptions), and quick filters.

Collaboration & Rollout

  • Worked closely with engineering to ensure search performance scaled with IntelliSearch integration.

  • Released under a staged rollout, gathering immediate customer feedback for Phase 2 planning.

Core Improvements

  • Expanded Search: Searches crate titles and descriptions, improving findability.

  • Categories: Ensured every crate belongs to one of five main categories, with multi-select filters.

  • Quick Filters: Added My Crates and New views to simplify tracking.

  • Persistent Filters: Designed filter persistence to remain active across navigation until reset, reducing frustration.

  • Modern Card Design: Delivered a cleaner UI with badges for New, install counts, and unpacked status for quick scanning.

Results

The new Crate Marketplace has become a more intuitive, customer-friendly hub for discovering and managing automations. Early qualitative feedback shows improved navigation, clearer organization, and faster crate discovery. Customers now have easier access to new and unpacked crates, and internal teams report fewer usability concerns.

Highlights:

  • Positive feedback from customers citing faster navigation and clearer organization.

  • Reduced friction in crate management with quick filters and persistence.

  • Improved discoverability supporting higher adoption of new and existing crates.
